Around the same time, xAI faced an insider-induced leak of a sensitive API key. In July 2025, a developer at Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)” division mistakenly committed an xAI API key to a public GitHub repo, exposing access to 52 private large language models (LLMs) including the Grok chatbot. This API credential, which granted control over dozens of AI models, was reported by an external researcher to still work for a period after the repository was removed, and the company was notified. It wasn’t an isolated fluke either – earlier in 2025, other internal LLM keys for Musk’s organizations (SpaceX, Tesla, X/Twitter) had been leaked in similar fashion. As one expert noted, “One leak is a mistake… but when the same type of sensitive key gets exposed again and again, it’s a a sign of deeper problems with key management, according to one researcher’s characterization in public reporting”.
